Getting Started

To launch Zend Server:

1. The first time Zend Server runs after installation, the Launch Zend Server wizard is opened with the License Agreement dialog displayed.

2. Read and accept the terms in the agreement, and click Next.
   The Launch Type dialog is displayed.

3. Select the launch type that best suits your working environment. Your selection determines the default system settings that Zend Server launches with:
   • Development - Launch Zend Server with server and PHP settings optimized for a development environment.
   • Production (Single Server) - Launch Zend Server with server and PHP settings optimized for a production environment.
   • Production (Create or Join a Cluster) - Launch Zend Server with server and PHP settings optimized for clustered production environment.
     See Launch Types for more information on the difference between the various launch profiles.
4. Click Next.
   If you selected to join a cluster, the Cluster Configurations dialog is displayed.
   If you selected Development or Production, the User Passwords dialog is displayed - skip to step 6.

5. Enter the details of the server and cluster database, and click Next.
   According to the details entered, the wizard identifies whether you are the first member of the cluster, or an additional member to a pre-existing cluster, and displays the next dialog accordingly.
   If this is the first server in the cluster, the User Passwords dialog is displayed. If not, the Summary dialog is displayed - skip to step 7.

6. Configure the passwords for accessing the Zend Server UI. Passwords must be between 4 - 20 characters long and can be changed at a later stage from within the product.
   • Enter and confirm a password for 'admin' user.
   • Enter and confirm a password for 'developer' user (optional).
7. Click Next.
   The Library Packages dialog is displayed with a list of the library packages deployed on Zend Server.

8. Click Next.
   The Summary dialog is displayed.
   

9. Review the details, and click Submit.
   Zend Server launches with the Dashboard page's Welcome tab displayed.

Tip:

At any point, access the Zend Server UI by clicking the Zend Server desktop icon (only in Windows), or opening your browser at: http://localhost:10081/ZendServer.

To view the UI:

1. To run Zend Server locally, open a browser and enter the following URL:

• For Windows: http://localhost:10081/ZendServer
• For Linux /Mac : http://localhost:10081/ZendServer or https://localhost:10082/ZendServer

2. If you are using a remote connection, replace localhost with your Host Name or IP.
3. The Login page is displayed, and prompts you to enter a username and password.

User passwords can be managed by the Administrator. See Working with Authentication and Passwords for more information.

Tip:

In most cases your Web server's port number will be 80, in which case you can omit the <port> parameter from your URL when browsing to your Web pages (as specified in this procedure). In the following circumstances though, your port number will be different, and the URL should be changed accordingly:
- You modified the port number on which Zend Server listens, during or after installation.
- You are running Zend Server on Mac OS X or IBMi, in which case the default port number is 10088.

To check if Apache is running:

• DEB, RPM: From the command line, run the following command:

ps -ef | grep -E 'apache2|httpd'

• Windows: In the system tray, hover over the Apache Monitor icon to view the Apache status. If necessary, right-click to open a dialog with the Stop, Start and Restart options.

A notification with the Apache server status is displayed.

To check if nginx is running:

From the command line, run the following command:

ps -ef | grep nginx

Note:

nginx is only supported on Linux DEB and RPM distributions.

To check if IIS is running:

1. Use Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314771 [^]
2. Look for the presence of the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InetStp

-OR-

3. Issue the following command in cmd :

Iisreset /status

If the following message is received, then IIS is not running:
“'iisreset' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.” ----&61664; not installed

If the following messages are received, then IIS is running:

“Status for Windows Process Activation Service ( WAS ) : Running"

"Status for World Wide Web Publishing Service ( W3SVC ) : Running” ---&61664; installed

To run a simple test script:

1. Create a file called 'hello.php'.

2. Enter the following code into the file:

<?php
echo "Hello Zend Server";
?>

3. Save the file in your Web server document root directory. Only files in this directory are serviced by the Web server. For information about the document root directory, see Deploying Code with Zend Server.

4. Open a browser and enter the following URL:
   http://localhost/hello.php

Your browser displays the "Hello Zend Server" message.

To configure Zend Server:

1. In the UI, go to Administration | Settings.
2. Review the default system settings.
3. In the General Settings area, define the default server. This server will be used for deploying or defining new applications.
4. In the Mail Settings area, configure the mail account for sending notifications from Zend Server.
5. In the UI, go to Configurations | PHP.
6. Review enabled PHP extensions, namely the 'date.timezone' directive in the 'date' extension.

7. For remote debugging in Zend Studio, configure the Zend Debugger allowed hosts directive.

To deploy an application:

1. In the UI, go to Applications | Configuration.
2. In the Action bar, click .
   The Deploy Application wizard displays.

3. Drag and drop your application package (.zpk) in the Deployment Package drop-box.
   -OR-
   Click Choose Files to browse and select your application package.
   After the progress bar reaches 100%, a success notification displays.

4. Click Next.
   The Application Details dialog displays.

5. Enter a display name, virtual host and path. The values for the virtual host and the path will make up your base URL. The dialog includes the following:

• Display Name - The name that Zend Server will display for this application.
• Virtual Host - This field automatically displays the default server that is defined on the Administration | Settings page. If you have not yet defined a default server, the default virtual host on your server will be used. You can add a new virtual host by clicking Add New.
• Path - The second part of your base URL, which can only be a directory. As you type, Zend Server offers path suggestions, and updates the URL below.
  Specifying a file will cause the application to deploy with errors. Leaving this field empty will deploy the application on the virtual host's root.

When finished, click Next.

Note:

The base URL (or root URL) is the URL where the application is available after it has been deployed. The base URL is unique and cannot be shared between two applications, and each application is required to have a base URL. Using a pseudo URL is also acceptable.  

6. If you specified a EULA in your application package, the License Agreement dialog displays.

7. Mark the ‘I have read and agree to the license agreement’ checkbox and click Next.
   The Prerequisites Validation dialog displays.

8. This dialog displays the parameters you specified as needing validation in your descriptor XML file.
   If your system does not qualify, an error message is displayed at the top of the dialog and the prerequisites in question appear in red. Click the link to open Zend Server in another tab in your browser, and then click after amending the specific dependencies.
   If all the parameters have been validated click Next.

Note:

If one or more of your parameters has failed to validate, open  your UI in another browser or tab, alter the configurations that need to be changed for the validation to succeed, and refresh the wizard.  

The User Parameters dialog displays.

9. The parameters and values that appear in this dialog are the parameters, and their default values, which you defined in your descriptor XML file, such as usernames and passwords.
   Change any values that are different than the default, and click Next.
   The Deployment Summary dialog opens.

10. The Deployment Summary dialog displays the details of the application to be deployed and a summary of the parameters you have defined for the application.
    To change anything on this page, click Previous and change it on the dialog it appears.
    Otherwise, click to deploy your application.
    Your application is deployed and added to the Applications list on the Applications | Configuration page.

11. In the toolbar, the restart icon lights up , indicating a restart is needed to apply changes. Click to restart server and apply changes.

12. To open your application click on your application in the Application page to expand the display, and click the Base URL link.

Important:

If your Base URL link includes '<default-server>', it must be replaced with your machine's IP address to open the link.

Tip:

If this process fails, information is available about the failure in the zdd.log file. In the UI, go to Overview | Logs to view log file.

To monitor your application:

1. In the UI, go to Overview | Dashboard.
   
2. From the Applications list on the left, select an application, and navigate between the displayed statistical charts in the Statistics Gallery.
   The charts display a variety of server and application performance metrics, and are a good place to begin monitoring your applications.
3. In the UI, go to Overview | Events.
   By default, all event items existing on your server are displayed in the Events list.
4. Filter the listed items to show only events associated with your application:
   1. Click Show Filters.
   2. Select your application from the Application filters area.

   The Events list displays all events associated with your application.

5. From the Events list, click an event ID number.
   The Event Details page is displayed.
6. If a code trace is available, the corresponding icon will appear in the Groups list in the Details table.
   Click the icon to view the trace on the Overview | Code Tracing page.

If you wish to add a server to an existing cluster:

1. In the UI, go to Administration | Servers.
2. In the Action bar, click .
   The Add Server dialog is displayed.

3. Enter the server's information as follows:

• Server Name - A unique name for the server that will be used for identification purposes.

• Server IP - The IP address of the server you wish to add to the cluster.

4. Click .
   The new server will be added to your cluster and will be added to the Servers list.

Note:

Only similar servers (same Web server, OS, Linux distribution, architecture and major PHP version) that have not been launched yet can be added to the cluster.

If you wish to join a cluster:

1. In the UI, go to Administration | Servers.
2. In the Action bar, click .
   The Add Server dialog is displayed.
3. Enter the following details:

• Server Name - A unique name for the server that will be used for identification purposes.
• IP Address The IP address of the server you wish to add to the cluster.
• Database Host - The cluster database host address.
• Database Name - The cluster database name.
• Database Username - The username for accessing the cluster database.
• Database Password - The password for accessing the cluster database.

4. Click .
   The server is now associated with the cluster.

Note:

Only similar servers (same Web server, OS, Linux distribution, architecture and major PHP version) can join a cluster.
